Welcome!

Technology and nature in good harmony;

Herzogenrath a city with unique charm!

The Roda town Herzogenrath – located directly on the border with the Netherlands – with its 47.000 inhabitants is a modern, European oriented city. It has developed from a former mining town into a technology city where its character is largely determined by a high-quality level of living, working and recreation.

Neustraße mit Flaggen

The origin of Herzogenrath lies in the 13th century landed established Hertogenrode (German: Landes Herzogenrath), also known as the “Land van Rode”. The “Land van Rode” is characterized by a centuries-long and shared history that was literally crossed by the Congress of Vienna in 1815. One part of Rode was allocated to the United Netherlands (present-day Kerkrade) and the other part to Prussia (present-day Herzogenrath). The state border, which also forms the border between Herzogenrath and Kerkrade, runs exactly over the middle of the street Nieuwstraat (German: Neustraße), which was until 1995 visualized by a 60 cm high wall which was a bit of a curiosity in Europe.

Burg Rode Komplettansicht

The historic castle of Rode in the center of Herzogenrath has an important place in the history of the city. It was already mentioned in 1104 and is today a popular wedding location. With its romantic ambiance it is also the setting for many cross-border and cultural encounters and activities. The castle is operated by the "Verein Burg Rode e.V."

From the former industry and mining, Herzogenrath has grown relatively quickly into a modern high-tech location. The two major boroughs of Kohlscheid and Merkstein complete the city center with various structures. For example, Kohlscheid is directly adjacent to the central municipality of Aachen. Because of the technical university Aachen (RWTH) located there, Kohlscheid became the only logical location for the Technology Park Herzogenrath.

The Merkstein district, on the other hand, develops as an attractive leisure area after the mine closed. The former stone mountain of the mine "Adolf" has been transformed into a recreation area for young and old. The city of Herzogenrath has rightfully been awarded the designation "natural community" and is therefore also an important regional recreation area.

Citizen service

The city council of Herzogenrath has a modern service center where assistance and complete citizen service take center stage. On 1 July 1999, the citizen's office with information library opened its doors. From that moment on, visitors can use this one-stop citizen service even better than before. With a wider opening, also on Saturdays, and short waiting times, the citizen's office is an optimally equipped central walk-in and counter area.

Business as a mainstay

TPH

For decades, Herzogenrath's business structure has been characterized by the glass and needle-making industry. Immediately after the closure and dismantling of the mining industry, Herzogenrath underwent a true metamorphosis towards a technologically oriented business location. The 'guiding principle' (start-grow-invest) was central to this development. In this context, the Technology Park Herzogenrath (TPH) was opened in 1989. Since then, more than 180 companies have settled in Herzogenrath, employing over 2.500 jobs. The enormously positive image this development has for young entrepreneurs, has already led to the realization of a third extension of the TPH. All in all there are nearly 25,000 sqm space for rent. The branches represented in the TPH vary from ICT, automotive, photonic, measurement and control technology, transport developments to semiconductor manufacturing and hardware and software development. All appreciate the direct proximity to the regional university landscape.

With the arrival of companies such as AIXTRON, CEROBEAR, HEAD acoustics and other major world players, future job opportunities are also secured.

Today the TPH is one of the biggest technology center in Germany.

EURODE – Experience Europe!

Eurode Logo

The term “Eurode” is a result of combining “Europe” and “Rode”. Today, Eurode is the result of decades of cross-border cooperation with the Dutch neighboring municipality of Kerkrade. Both municipalities Kerkrade and Herzogenrath go back to a long and shared common history.

Examples of common and cross-border EURODE projects:

EBC Herzogenrath Kerkrade

The most striking example of the many joint activities and projects to date is the construction and operation of the Eurode Business Center (EBC). The location of this cross-border business center building is unique in Europe. It is built exactly on the Dutch-German state border, which also forms the border between the municipalities of Kerkrade and Herzogenrath. One half of the multi-company building is located on Dutch / Kerkrade territory and the other part on German / Herzogenrath territory. The EBC is a popular location for entrepreneurs and for both countries and municipalities the setting for many cross-border activities, meetings and receptions.

Culture, leisure and recreation

These three components guarantee the well-being in Herzogenrath. In addition to the numerous sports and leisure accommodations / locations, Herzogenrath has a richly varied club life. In addition, Herzogenrath has an extensive cultural program that is offered and performed on several stages. The renovated train station "Herzogenrath Central" (also called "Station Eurode") will soon be expanded with an art and communication center.
The historic castle of Rode has already developed into an ideal venue for the general public for concerts and music performances of all kinds.
Once a year, the castle is the setting for the traditional castle party. An annual fair with many stalls, music, clowns, dance performances and many more activities dominate life in Herzogenrath for a weekend. It is also the centre of the historic christmas market.

Local economy - urban development - traffic and environment

The city has set itself the goal of providing sustainable synergy to the Herzogenrath site as an attractive living, working and leisure community with a high standard of living.
Hundreds of new jobs have been created in the last years. Through active city marketing, the dialogue between trade, economy and industry has intensified during repeated entrepreneurial consultations and meetings.
New residential areas such as 'Schleypenhof', 'Finkenstraße', 'Raderfeld' and 'An Vieslapp' appear to be attractive residential locations for the many young families who settle here, taking advantage of the existing infrastructure with the nearby connections (motorways such as the A44 and A4).
The local infrastructure, together with the bus connections, form a true network of car-free streets, roads and paths.
The increase in the number of stops of the Euregiobahn in and around Herzogenrath, makes the use of public transport and mobility for the inhabitants of Herzogenrath a better alternative than the use of private car.
